There is nofree lunch, not even on the Internet, and if you fall forthe hype, it will cost money for zero return (if you arelucky). Why do the hypesters spend their money and effort todeliver their hype? Look down the page. There's an 'OrderNow' button. It's the money, your money. The hypester cannow earn your money while he sleeps.Hard work at startUnderstand this: any business, on or off the Internet,requires hard work to get it started. It may eventually runon autopilot, but in the beginning, it will take hard work,time, and determination.Are you ready for that? Because, if not, save time and stopreading this now. You will be one of the 95% who fail.No one can simply put up a website (or have one provided bya company) and expect others to find it. Early in 2005,there were 56,100,000 commercial websites on the Internet.Even a website in the top 1% was just one out of 561,000. Mypoint is this: what chance does your website have of beingfound if it languishes there without any promotion? Suppose your website was even in the top one-tenth of apercent, one of 56,100 websites. How difficult is it tofind? Think of it this way: suppose you are at an outdoorevent with 56,099 other people and a friend wants to findyou without knowing where you are in the milling crowd. Doyou think it would be easy, even though your friend knowswhat you look like? A waste of spaceNow substitute a stranger for your friend, a stranger whohas never seen your face. Impossible? But there are no true get-rich-quickschemes (except for the hipsters if you fall for theirtalk).The Internet is a communications medium. It is a way to getmessages across to others (once they have found yourmessage). But since they cannot see your eyeballs or readyour facial expressions or body language, you have to wintheir trust in other ways (just as I hope to win yours).Internet presence is about trustThe Internet is not like a store in a mall, and if you wantto be successful with it, you cannot treat it the same way.Let me make a point: apart from things like e-mails, chatsand games, why do you sign onto the Internet? Isn't itmostly for information? Now, assuming price is not a factor,why do you buy from one merchant and not another? Because ofthe guarantee or because you read the endorsements abouttheir service?The Internet, more than in a store in the mall where you cansee the seller's face, is about trust. And you gain thattrust by providing honest, reliable information.You can have the greatest product since sliced bread, but itwill rarely sell itself on the Internet. Your work, shouldyou choose to accept it, will be to get your product noticedand to get yourself trusted. That is the nature of theInternet, whether it is used for a home-based business or bya giant corporation.
